Das ERA-Net CORE Organic (Coordination of European Transnational Research in Organic Food and Farming Systems) hat zum Ziel, die europäische grenzüberschreitende Forschung zur ökologischen Landwirtschaft zu fördern und zu koordinieren.

Das Instrument der ERA-Nets wurde im Rahmen des sechsten europäischen Forschungsrahmenprogramms ins Leben gerufen, um die Fragmentierung im europäischen Forschungsraum zu reduzieren. Die ERA-Nets stellen ein Instrument zum Austausch über aktuelle Forschungsthemen und Prioritäten zwischen Projektträgern und Ministerien dar.

Die ökologische Forschung in Europa ist gekennzeichnet durch kleine, vereinzelte Forschergruppen. Eine koordinierte transnationale Forschung unter CORE Organic ermöglicht eine grenzüberschreitende Bearbeitung wichtiger Themen und Fragestellungen für den ökologischen Landbau, die über Landesgrenzen hinaus gehen. Auch die Verbreitung der Forschungsergebnisse wird durch die Netzwerkstrukturen erleichtert.

Die Beteiligung deutscher Forschungseinrichtungen an CORE Organic-Projekten wird mit Mitteln des BÖL finanziert.

Die erste Förderphase: Core Organic I (2005–2007)

Elf europäische Länder waren an der ersten Förderphase von Core Organic beteiligt: Österreich, Dänemark, Finnland, Frankreich, Deutschland, Italien, Niederlande, Norwegen, Schweden, Schweiz, Großbritannien.

In dieser ersten Phase wurden wichtige Grundsteine für den weiteren Verlauf des ERA-Nets gelegt. Unter anderem wurde die Internet-Datenbank Organic Eprints geschaffen, um eine Plattform für Veröffentlichungen bereit zu stellen.

Im September 2006 wurde die erste thematische Bekanntmachung veröffentlicht. Folgende Themen standen hierbei im Mittelpunkt:

• Animal diseases and parasite management (reducing antibiotics)
• Quality of organic food – health and safety
• Innovative marketing strategies – Identification of successful marketing methods

Acht transnationale Forschungsprojekte zur Förderung ausgewählt:

• ANIPLAN – Planning for better animal health and welfare
• COREPIG – A tool to prevent diseases and parasites in organic pig herds
• AGTEC-Org – Methods to improve quality in organic wheat
• iPOPY – Innovative public organic food procurement for youth
• PathORGANIC – Assessing and reducing risks of pathogen contamination in organic vegetables
• PHYTOMILK – What makes organic milk healthy?
• QACCP – How to assure safety, health and sensory qualities of organic products
• FCP – Farmer consumer partnership – How to communicate ethical values?

Die zweite Förderphase: CORE Organic II (2010–2013)

In der zweiten Förderphase haben sich zehn weitere Länder dem ERA-Net CORE Organic angeschlossen: Belgien, Tschechische Republik, Estland, Spanien, Irland, Litauen, Malta, Slowenien, Türkei, Flandern.

Insgesamt wurden in CORE Organic II drei thematische Bekanntmachungen zu folgenden Themen veröffentlicht:

• Cropping: Designing productive cropping systems
• Quality: Ensuring quality and safety of organic food along the whole chain
• Monogastric: Robust and competitive production systems for pigs, poultry and fish
• Plant breeding
• Markets
• Sustainable and efficient management of phosphorus and use of secondary fertilizers within organic agriculture

Die folgenden 14 transnationalen Forschungsprojekte wurden zur Förderung ausgewählt:

• AuthenticFood – Promotion of organic food through assured authenticity
• BICOPOLL – Targeted biocontrol and pollination enhancement
• BIO-INCROP – Innovative cropping techniques to increase soil health in organic fruit tree crops
• HealthyHens – management of health, welfare and environmental impacts in organic laying hens
• ICOPP – Developing sustainable 100 percent organic feed strategies for pigs and poultry
• InterVeg – Enhancing multifunctional benefits of cover crops – vegetables intercropping
• ProPIG – Strategies to reduce environmental impact by improving health and welfare of organic pigs
• SafeOrganic – Restrictive use of antibiotics in organic animal farming – a potential for safer, high quality products with less antibiotic resistant bacteria
• Softpest multitrap – Management of strawberry blossom weevil and European tarnished plant bug in organic strawberry and raspberry using semio-chemical traps
• TILMAN-ORG – Integrating reduced tillage and green manures in organic cropping systems
• Vineman.Org – Integration of plant resistance, cropping practices, and biocontrol agents for enhancing disease management, yield efficiency, and biodiversity in organic European vineyards
• COBRA – Coordinating Organic plant Breeding Activities for Diversity
• HealthyGrowth – Healthy growth: From niche to volume with integrity and trust
• IMPROVE-P – Improved Phosphorus Resource efficiency in Organic agriculture Via recycling and Enhanced biological mobilization

Die dritte Förderphase: CORE Organic PLUS (2015–2018)

Auch in der dritten Förderphase sind 21 Länder an dem ERA-Net Core Organic beteiligt. Im Dezember 2013 wurde eine Bekanntmachung zu folgenden Themenschwerpunkten veröffentlicht:

• Plant/Soil interaction in organic crop production
• Functional biodiversity to improve management of diseases, weeds and pests
• Ensuring quality and safety of organic food along the processing chain
• Livestock health management system including breeding

Es wurden folgende elf Projekte zur Förderung ausgewählt:

• PRODIVA – Crop diversification and weeds
• ECOORCHARD – Innovative design and management to boost
• PrOPara – Tackling the parasitological challenges in organic ruminant farming practices
• 2-ORG-COWS – Towards preventive health management in native dual-purpose cattle adapted to organic pasture based production systems via novel breeding strategies based on novel trait recording
• ORGANICDAIRYHEALTH – Improving animal health and welfare in organic cattle milk production through breeding and management
• SusOrganic – Development of quality standards and optimised processing methods for organic produce
• FaVOR-DeNonDe – Drying, Juices and Jams of Organic Fruit and Vegetables: what happens to Desired and Non-Desired compounds?
• ECOBERRIES – Ensuring quality and safety of organic food along the processing chain
• FERTIL CROP – Fertility building management measures in organic cropping systems
• RESOLVE – Restoring optimal Soil functionality in degraded areas within organic Vineyards
• SOILVEG – Improving soil conservation and resource use in organic cropping systems for vegetable production
